Newsletter 13. June 2026

I am pleased to share that I will be participating in the conference “Habiter, raconter, partager les Méditerranées”, organised by EHESS – École des hautes études en sciences sociales in partnership with l’ensa•marseille — École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Marseille on June 24th and 25th at l’IMVT – Institut méditerranéen de la ville et des territoires in Marseille.

This interdisciplinary event brings together scholars, practitioners, and heritage and cultural actors to reflect on the Mediterranean not merely as a geographical space, but as a complex field of social, historical, urban, and environmental interactions. Through dialogue across disciplines and national contexts, the conference explores how Mediterranean societies inhabit, narrate, and collectively shape their shared spaces and futures.

I look forward to contributing to these discussions as my work is concerned with understanding how cities are lived, remembered, and continuously reinterpreted through everyday practices. Through research, documentation, and artistic inquiry, I have sought to explore the relationship between tangible and intangible heritage, collective memory, and the evolving urban landscapes of Mediterranean cities, particularly Alexandria.

At a time when Mediterranean cities face interconnected challenges related to climate adaptation, heritage preservation, urbanisation, and social cohesion, such conversations are essential for fostering new perspectives and collaborative approaches.

I am honoured to be part of this important academic exchange and look forward to the insights and partnerships that may emerge from it.

As part of the Institut français’s flagship programme: Saison Méditerranée 2026, my exhibition Mediterranean Reflections from Alexandria and Marseille was inaugurated on the 15th of February at the Institut français d’Alexandrie, in the presence of the Ambassador and the Consul of France in Egypt.

This exhibition presents a visual dialogue between the two Mediterranean port cities, moving beyond their postcard pre-structured images. The work delves into the ordinary urban fabric, the thresholds, shopfronts, and everyday informal practices that shape their unique heritage and cultural identities. Drawing on the concept of the “Third Place,” the photographs and drawings on display read the Mediterranean street as a shared living room, a space where domestic life and collective memory extend into the public sphere. By de-emphasising monumentality in favour of the “ordinary,” this practice-based research offers a counter-narrative to mainstream heritage discourse, proposing the Mediterranean as a shared sensory environment that transcends political borders. The research explores how societies are influenced and shaped by urban identity, cultural heritage, and collective memory. Additionally, it examines how similarities and/or differences may represent different expressions of a shared Mediterranean vocabulary, reflected in architecture, urban planning, and social practices.
